2023 World Day for Safety & Health at Work – 28 April

We look at what’s behind World Day for Safety and Health at Work and its aims.

Around the world, it’s estimated that around 6,300 people die every day as a result of occupational accidents or work-related illnesses. The economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is believed to amount to around 4% of global Gross Domestic Product each year, which equates to $3.76tn.

An internationally-supported campaign

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an international campaign, which takes place annually, that aims to promote safe, healthy and decent work. It is observed on April 28th each year and is recognised by the International Labour Organization (ILO). The ILO has 187 member states including Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The campaign’s main objective is to raise awareness about the importance of occupational safety and health, and to promote a culture of prevention. It also serves as an opportunity to encourage governments, employers and workers to take action to improve safety and health in the workplace. The ILO says the campaign is

"intended to focus international attention on emerging trends in the field of occupational safety and health and on the magnitude of work-related injuries, diseases and fatalities worldwide."

World Day for Safety and Health at Work was first observed in 2003, and in the 20 years since then it has become an important platform for promoting workplace safety and health around the world.

This year’s safety and health theme

Each year, the campaign focuses on a specific theme. Themes in previous years have included:
Investing in resilient occupational safety and health (OSH) systems.
Improving the safety and health of young workers.
Collection and use of OSH data.
Workplace stress.
Building a culture of prevention in OSH.

This year, the theme is: a safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental principle and right at work.
